Swine Memorials and Awards
Tanya Friday Memorial
Tanya was in 4-H Livestock for
eight years. Prior to that, she participated in Horse
shows, starting as a pre-4-H'er. She was also a
member of FFA. She loved her animals and was always a top competitor.
Tanya won the Jerry Henning Memorial Trophy twice for Showmanship in
Swine. That was a very special award trophy to Tanya. She also won
the Grand Champion Beef Showmanship award and she won the first Round Robin
contest ever held at the fair. She took pride in her animals and they always
placed in the top of their classes.
Tanya gave her all to whatever she was doing. She had a big smile, a very soft spirit, and an easy-going personality, which she related to the animals. Tanya loved the West Valley Fair-the people, the excitement of showing, the fun of being with all the kids, the water fights In the barns-it was a highlight of her summers.
In memory of Tanya, forever 19, a traveling trophy was donated by a special friend to be presented to the Grand Champion 4-H Market Swine.
Jerry Henning Memorial
Jerry Dean Henning was an active member of the Little Rattlesnake 4-H Club for three years and served as the club's President in 1977. He worked on many club projects and exhibited at the West Valley Fair.
Jerry enjoyed school and was on the Honor Roll in the ninth grade at Naches High School. He enjoyed all sports, with baseball being his favorite. His quick smile and witty personality made him well-liked by all that knew him.
In memory of Jerry, age 14 and a half, a traveling trophy is being presented to the 4-H Champion Swine Showman each year (Senior Showman, starting in 2000). This trophy will not become the permanent property of any exhibitor.
Betty Boisselle Memorial
Betty Boisselle was one ol the founders of the West Valley Fair. She was very active in all aspects of it from the mid-'SO's through the late '60's. She served as Vice President of the Fairboard in 1961, as well as Reporter and a Director other years. She headed many committees, including Royalty, the Parade, and the Horse Show. She worked hard promoting the Fair, making it the early success that it was.
A traveling trophy
donated by Mr. & Mrs. Dick Van
DeGraal of Sunnyside will be awarded to the owner of the Grand
Champion FFA Market Swine in memory of Betly Boisselle. This
trophy will not become a permanent possession of any exhibitor.
Brianna Biles Memorial
Brianna (Brie) Biles was an active member in the Young Riders 4-H Club. In her precious 9 years, Brie attended many West Valley Fairs as a helper to her older sister. When Brie received her first 4-H Swine, the excitement in her face could be seen everywhere. Unfortunately, her older sister had to show Brio's swine in her memory.
Brie spent many hours caring
for her animals and was active in parades and talent shows. She also enjoyed
Junior Barrel Racing and riding in the mountains.
It is with great pride that we
donate the 4-H Novice Showmanship Trophy in Brianna's
memory. This trophy will not become the permanent property of any exhibitor.
Charles Slaag Traveling Trophy
In recognition of 30 years of 4-H and FFA involvement, the children and grandchildren of Charles Slagg have decided to honor "Chuck" by donating a traveling trophy in his name. Beginning with the 1997 West Valley Fair, the Charles Slagg Champion Swine Showman Trophy will be awarded to the top FFA Swine Showman .
Charles donates his time and energy to anyone who needs his help with the raising and breeding of swine in the Yakima Valley. The results of his efforts can be seen in the trophy and ribbon collections of children throughout our area. In addition to helping others with their swine, on any given day, you can see Charles out exercising some of his own 20-30 pigs.
Chuck's children and grandchildren can tell you that he takes great pride in the swine he breeds for children and competitors in the West Valley Fair. This trophy will be an annual traveling award and will not become the permanent possession of any competitor.
